Workshops in East Africa
On a recent trip to Uganda and Rwanda where my non-profit had the opportunity to engage in several beautiful and inspiring community initiatives. This is one of the days that really captured me, and having the opportunity to spend time with kids who are passionate for knowledge was great to be a part of. I am hoping once COVID is in the clear we can resume things as semi normal societies, come together and unite in ways we desperately need, to make this a bigger project, and one that becomes ongoing and accessible to more kids. It’s a daily reminder to me that I can use my skills to help others who don’t have the same opportunities and advantages I do.
We started the day off inside the classroom, talking about basic techniques and how to use photography as a tool to tell stories. We moved outdoors to start a couple shoots with children volunteering to model for the excited photographers in training. For many of these kids, it was the first time they had seen themselves in a “picture.” We all learned a lot from each other, and certainly some things I take for granted in life has helped me to re-examine myself both as a humanitarian, a father, and as a professional photographer. It was a magical day and I’m forever grateful to these children, their kindness, willingness to learn, and for showing me some of the simpler things that I tend to forget.
